Meet NASA's X-43, the fastest unmanned aircraft, ever went to the sky. In March of 2004, NASA made history by successfully testing 2 flights of X-43, a scramjet-powered aircraft, that flew at the hypersonic speed, above Mach 5. The X-43 was the part of NASA's $200+ million Hyper X program, a research effort designed to demonstrate air breathing propulsion technologies, for access to space and high speed flights within the atmosphere. The first attempt by NASA occurred in June of 2001, but failed because the booster rocket went out of control just 13 seconds after it was launched from a B-52 mothership. But great things happen to those who don't stop learning and trying, right? The second and third attempts resulted in a highly successful record breaking hypersonic flights. Speed of Mach 6.5 was achieved in March 2004, and final flight in November of 2006 achieved the speeds of Mach 9.6, or 7000 miles per hour, at the altitude of 110,000 feet. This was recognized by the Guinness World Records as a new world speed record by a jet-powered aircraft.
