A virtual LAN (VLAN) is
A virtual LAN (VLAN) is any broadcast domain that is partitioned and isolated in a computer network at the data link layer (OSI layer 2).[1][2] LAN is the abbreviation for local area network and in this context virtual refers to a physical object recreated and altered by additional logic. VLANs work by applying tags to network frames and handling these tags in networking systems – creating the appearance and functionality of network traffic that is physically on a single network but acts as if it is split between separate networks. In this way, VLANs can keep network applications separate despite being connected to the same physical network, and without requiring multiple sets of cabling and networking devices to be deployed.
Virtual LAN (VLAN) is a concept in which we can divide the devices logically on layer 2 (data link layer). Generally, layer 3 devices divides broadcast domain but broadcast domain can be divided by switches using the concept of VLAN.
A broadcast domain is a network segment in which if a device broadcast a packet then all the devices in the same broadcast domain will receive it. The devices in the same broadcast domain will receive all the broadcast packet but it is limited to switches only as routers don’t forward out the broadcast packet.To forward out the packets to different VLAN (from one VLAN to another) or broadcast domain, inter Vlan routing is needed. Through VLAN, different small size sub networks are created which are comparatively easy to handle.
A VLAN (virtual LAN) is a subnetwork which can group together collections of devices on separate physical local area networks (LANs). A LAN is a group of computers and devices that share a communications line or wireless link to a server within the same geographical area.
VLANs make it easy for network administrators to partition a single switched network to match the functional and security requirements of their systems without having to run new cables or make major changes in their current network infrastructure. VLANs are often set up by larger businesses to re-partition devices for better traffic management.
VLANs are also important because they can help improve the overall performance of a network by grouping together devices that communicate most frequently. VLANs also provide security on larger networks by allowing a higher degree of control over which devices have access to each other. VLANs tend to be flexible because they are based on logical connections, rather than physical.
