Since 2000, America’s primary economic policy tool has been the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which offers qualified African countries duty-free access to the US market for many goods. As AGOA approaches its current expiry date of 2025, this is an important moment to explore what steps the US and African countries can take to boost trade and investment.

At this event, Senator Chris Coons will discuss the bipartisan AGOA Renewal and Improvement Act that would enhance and extend AGOA until 2041. He will emphasize the importance of strengthening ties between the US and Africa through continued trade and economic development. An expert panel of US and African leaders from the government and private sector will reflect on the progress of AGOA and lessons for policymakers. They will explore steps that could be taken to further expand AGOA access and utilization, as well as integrate AGOA with the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) to support the development of intra-African supply chains.
