Mary Berry's Treacle Tart was the third technical challenge in The Great British Bake Off (GBBO) Season3. Treacle tart is made with golden syrup, breadcrumbs and lemon to cut through the sweetness. Serve with crème fraiche. Treacle tart is a traditional British dessert. The earliest known recipe for the dessert is from English author Mary Jewry in her cookbooks from the late 19th century.

GBBO S03E03 - Tarts week - Mary Berry's Treacle Tart

Ingredients

For the pastry:
1. Plain flour - 250 grams/9 oz
2. Butter - 130 grams/4½ oz plus extra for greasing
3. Cold Water - 3 tablespoon

For the filling:
1. Golden syrup - 400 grams/14 oz
2. Fine fresh white breadcrumbs - 150 grams/5½ oz
3. Lemon zest of 2 lemons
4. Lemon juice of 2 lemons
5. Egg one beaten, to use as egg wash

Treacle Tart is prepared using shortcrust pastry, with a thick filling made of golden syrup, also known as light treacle, breadcrumbs, and lemon juice or zest. A modern alternative recipe uses ground almonds in place of the breadcrumbs. The tart is normally served hot or warm with a scoop of clotted cream, ordinary cream, ice cream or custard. Some more recent recipes add cream, eggs, or broth, to make a softer filling.

Treacle bread is a homemade bread popular in Ireland and is similar to soda bread but with the addition of treacle.
