CDU leader Friedrich Merz expects that the shooting of Donald Trump will significantly influence the US presidential election campaign in favor of the Republican challenger. "This election campaign will be decided by images more than any other before," said Merz on Sunday in an ARD summer interview. Now there are images of a "frail president" Joe Biden. Trump, on the other hand, stands there with his fist raised and blood on his head, the American flag above him. "These are the kind of heroic stories that are often told in America," added Merz.
At the same time, he warned that a similar hate-filled polarization as in the USA must be avoided in Germany, especially on the right and right-wing extremist side. The CDU leader explicitly blamed the AfD for such a development. "The debate in the German Bundestag, including with the AfD, is becoming more and more hurtful, more and more personal, directed against everyone, against us, against the Social Democrats, the FDP, the Greens. That is not good for our democracy," Merz criticized. "I do not want to hope that it escalates and that something like what happened tonight in America happens, but it cannot be ruled out." That is why we must be careful.
