Tarikh is a daily program in which we present you with incidents and stories of noteworthy persons of Indian History in Hindi. In this edition of Tarikh, Divyanshi Talks about the Siege of Chittorgarh by Mughal emperor Akbar in 1567 that lasted 5 months. Akbar led a military expedition against the Mewar kingdom that began in 1567 in which the Mughals successfully captured the fort of Chittorgarh. Akbar, as part of his expansionist policy, besieged the politically important Sisodia capital of Chittor in October 1567. Maharana Udai singh, Ruler of Mewar fled to Udaipur and placed the fort under the command of Jaimal Rathore. In the ensuing Battle, Rajput Soldiers fought valiantly and wreaked havoc on the Mughal Army. Akbar had to change his strategy several times to Enter the fort after a hard fought battle in which, Jaimal Rathore succumbed to a musket shot of Akbar on 22 February 1568. After the subjugation of the fort, Akbar ordered a general massacre of Chittor's population in which 30,000 civilians were slaughtered and several women and children were taken as prisoners. He handed the fort to his trusted general Asaf Khan and returned to Agra.
