Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin (December 18, 1878 - March 5, 1953) was a Georgian revolutionary and the second leader of the Soviet Union. He ruled from the mid-1920s until his death in 1953. He was of Georgian ethnicity. He served as General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1922 to 1952, and held the position of Head of the Council of State from 1941 to 1953. He initially headed a collective government based on a one-party system and by the 1930s had become a de facto dictator. Stalin ideologically followed the Leninist interpretation. He contributed to developing the ideas of Marxism-Leninism, and the total policies he pursued are called “Stalinism.”
