Uterine fibroids are the most common benign tumors in women. They are noncancerous growths that develop in the muscular wall of the uterus. Fibroids can vary in size and number. There are three main types of fibroids: Submucosal fibroids: These grow inside the uterine cavity, and can cause heavy periods, pain, and miscarriage. Intramural fibroids: These grow within the muscular wall of the uterus, and may cause no symptoms or cause pressure, pain, and irregular periods. Subserosal fibroids: These grow on the outside of the uterus, and may cause no symptoms or cause pressure, pain, and difficulty emptying the bladder. The treatment of fibroids depends on the severity of the symptoms and the woman's desire for future pregnancy
