Ever since the EML system was introduced on the BMW E32 750i drivers are reporting 'Limp Home Mode' when actually their cars are just broken. Limp Home Mode (Engine Fail Safe Prog) was introduced with the 750i (M70 V12) and the 735i (M30 I-6) E32's because they were the first production cars to get Fly-By-Wire throttle bodies (DK Motors) and the acronym was EML.

Later the E31 8-Series was launched with the M70 V12 engine with EML and the rest is history. Strangely, the E31 840ci V8 was introduced much later but still had mechanical operation of the throttle. In 2022 the mechanical throttle is long gone in production cars and electronic throttles were superseded by Variable Valve Lift (Valvetronic) in BMW's N62 engine.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Fly-By-Wire systems and why should the 840ci V8 have got it!
