Before the Muslim invasions, India faced attacks from several non-Muslim invaders. The Greeks were among the earliest, with Alexander the Great attacking Western India and his general, Seleucus, ruling over parts of the region. Following Alexander, Greek rulers like Demetrius and Menander controlled large parts of Punjab. The next wave of invaders were the Scythians (Shakas), originating from Central Asia. They ruled over regions like Gujarat and Malwa, with Rudradaman I being one of their prominent rulers. In the 1st century CE, the Kushans, led by rulers like Kanishka, extended their rule from Afghanistan to Northern India, promoting Buddhism significantly. The last significant pre-Islamic invaders were the Huns from Central Asia, who caused extensive destruction in the 5th century CE, impacting Northern and Western India. The most notable Hunnic leader, Mihirakula, was known for his persecution of Buddhists. These invasions reshaped Indian history long before the arrival of Muslim invaders like Muhammad bin Qasim in the 8th century CE.
