In this video I perform a real world riding scenario, and test the fuel consumption characteristics of a 2024 KTM 500 EXC-F. The main objectives were to determine at what point the low fuel level light comes on, at what mileage the bike engine stops receiving fuel, and how much fuel remains in the tank once the pump stops picking up fuel.

The reason these motorcycles are not using all of the fuel in the tank is because of the fuel pumps location and design. The pump is mounted centrally in the tank and as a result will not pick up the fuel in the lower portions if fuel is not being splashed upwards while riding, or if the rider does not actively take steps to get fuel up to the pump at a certain point. For example a rider can tip the bike to the side or pull a wheelie to get fuel at the pump. You can utilize more fuel if you do so.

With that said, I perform my test without making much effort to get fuel to the pump. I just ride the bike and let things happen naturally.

The final numbers are a representation of that.

The final results are as follows: (Metric values were converted from imperial values)
- The low fuel indicator light came on at 84.8 miles. (136.47 km)
- The engine started to lack fuel and sputter at 103.5 miles (166.65 km). The engine continued to run with intermittent sputtering.
- The engine completely stopped receiving fuel at 110.5 miles (177.83 km). There was fuel remaining in the tank (.141 gallons or .533 liters).
- The mileage totals for the mixed riding were 24.2 miles (38.94 km) on the highway, and 86.3 miles (138.88 km) off-road.
- Once the bike was out of fuel, the contents of two 30 ounce (60 ounces or 1.77 L) fuel bottles were added to the bike. I then traveled 3 miles (4.82 km) to the next fuel station.
- The bikes fuel tank and the auxiliary bottles were refilled with 2.099 gallons (7.94 L) of fuel total.
- The bike averaged 52.6 miles per gallon (22.39 km/L) on this particular ride.
- The factory tank has a capacity of approximately 2.24 gallons, or 8.5 liters.
- There was .141 gallons, or .533 liters of fuel remaining in the bikes tank when the fuel pump stopped picking up fuel.
