Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) mental health activity manager Davide Musardo describes the unrelenting mental health impacts of the war in Gaza on children and how MSF is working to help them.
TRANSCRIPT:
What we are seeing in little children, especially, are symptoms related to depression, because they lost everything. They lost their parents, they lost their siblings, they lost their house, their toys, everything that makes their daily life normal.
What we see are symptoms also of anxiety, stress reaction, acute stress reaction, and many times the desire to die, instead of living this horror they are living in this moment.
Children are the most affected because they don't have the capacity to explain what is happening to them. They don't have the tools to cope with all these tragic situations.
The difficulty we are facing at this moment is that there is no space for them to fully recover. This is because they are living in a constant situation of exposure to trauma, to explosions, and to bombings.
And this doesn't allow them to start a process of healing that should be done as soon as possible—as soon as we have the ceasefire.
Because without a ceasefire, it will be difficult [for them] to get over this situation.
What we are doing with them is mainly play therapy. It's through play that we get over the trauma, the pain, how to manage the pain, how to manage some emotions that are coming and are not easy to deal with.
