Alicante is the capital of the province of the same name and, after Valencia, the most important city of the autonomous Valencian Community.

Its economy is mainly based on tourism and wine production. In addition to wine, olive oil and fruit are also exported. There are also light industries such as food processing, as well as a leather, textile and stoneware industry. In addition, Alicante has been the seat of the European Union Intellectual Property Office since 1994.

The Central Market of Alicante (in Valencian, Mercat Central d'Alacant) is a building of eclectic style, with ornaments of Valencian modernism, from the early twentieth century, which serves as a municipal market, located in the Spanish city of Alicante. Located on Alfonso el Sabio Avenue, it was designed by architect Francisco Fajardo Guardiola in 19151 and completed by Juan Vidal Ramos in 1922.

The building is basically rectangular in plan, although to absorb the irregularity of the block a traffic circle is projected on the southwest corner and a break in the street of Capitan Segarra, used to strategically place one of the accesses. The rotunda is emphasized as a volume distinct from the main one and has a hemispherical roof. The most emblematic facade is the one that falls on the avenue of Alfonso el Sabio, accessing it through a large staircase.
