It has been said that at the very foundation of all mental illness is an unwillingness to experience legitimate pain. Indeed some of the steps we take to make ourselves feel more secure are an instinctive reaction to the fear, and therefor seem like a good idea, but instinct is not rational thinking. George helps us understand the danger of irrational fear using the fear of germs as an example.
