A playthrough of THQ's 1992 licensed-based platformer for the Nintendo Game Boy, The Ren & Stimpy Show: Space Cadet Adventures.

I remember first reading the reviews on magazines for this one and getting super excited that Ren and Stimpy were getting a video game. Did anyone else out there get pumped for it too back in the day?

The reviews weren't bad - not great, mind you - but not negative enough to steer my attention. I remember knowing I should avoid it because:

A: The early 90s saw a lot of terrible license cash-ins, and

B: Playing a THQ game was usually tantamount to licking the urine of stray cats off of the nettles growing in your untended back garden.

However, I was not to be swayed. It was Ren and Stimpy. How could it go wrong?

Well, surprisingly enough, it didn't really go that wrong! At least, not the first time out. And could anyone deny the allure of...

SPAAAAAACE MAAAAAADNESS!  ...?

Space Cadet Adventures was an unexpectedly playable platformer from Imagineering, who had entered a "Renaissance period," if you will, of game quality. Between 91 and 92, they produced a number of thoroughly mediocre yet entirely playable games based on popular TV and movie licenses. Home Alone on GB/SNES, Bart vs. the Space Mutants on NES and Camp Deadly on GB, and this first Ren and Stimpy game were all reasonable showings - just please, for the love of God, ignore the utterly wretched Rocky and Bullwinkle game.

It mirrors Bart Simpson's Escape from Camp Deadly on several levels. The graphics are all pretty clean with large sprites and enough contrast that everything remained (relatively) clear on the Game Boy screen, and the art stayed faithful to the style of the show. The cutscenes look great, and there are a number of digitized sound bites peppered throughout. Some of the show's music also makes an appearance which is cool, though it doesn't really sound that great.

As far as gameplay goes, it's pretty typical of your average side-scrolling platform and fairly easy. Most of the game has you walking left-to-right, dealing with enemies and precision jumping sequences, and it all works well thanks to the responsive controls. The shoot 'em up stage... not so much, but at least it's short lived.

I'm sure there's some nostalgia tinting my view here, but still, the first Ren & Stimpy game is quite a solid bit of fan service, however shallow and brief. It's a damn sight better than most of other games based on the license!

(But not the Game Gear game. That was definitely better.)

Check the card links for some other Ren and Stimpy games if you're interested!
