ISRAEL: "Prevent a wildfire" Annalena Baerbock's appeal to Iran and Lebanon
Following the killing of the Hamas leader in Tehran, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) warned of an expansion of fighting in the Middle East and a threat to the ceasefire negotiations. An escalation of fighting would have catastrophic consequences for the people, said Baerbock during a visit to the Carl Zeiss company in Jena on Wednesday. At the same time, she stressed that the opportunity for a ceasefire and the release of hostages must not be squandered.
"Every decision that is made now can lead to a de-escalation of the situation or add fuel to the fire," said Baerbock. She called on all those responsible, especially Iran, to exercise maximum restraint and de-escalation. "It is crucial that a regional conflagration is prevented now and that the entire region is not plunged into chaos."
According to the Islamist Palestinian organization Hamas and Iran, the head of the Hamas political bureau, Ismail Haniya, was killed in Tehran on Wednesday night. Haniya died in a "Zionist attack on his residence," Hamas said.
A few hours earlier, the Israeli army in Lebanon had killed the highest-ranking Hezbollah military commander, Fuad Shukr, whom it blames for the deadly rocket attack on the Golan Heights on Saturday.
