We need to pay attention when the narrator of the book of Ruth uses the phrase “Ruth the Moabite” over and over again.

Ruth was a foreign outsider who would have been viewed with scorn and suspicion, and marrying a Moabite widow would have been scandalous.

The Bible traces the origin of Moab and the Moabites to the inappropriate relationship between Lot and his daughters, one of whom gave birth to a son named Moab, the father of the Moabites. Throughout Israel’s history, stories of Moabite women feature idolatry, seduction, and deceit. Thus, we need to pay attention when the narrator of the book of Ruth uses the phrase “Ruth the Moabite” over and over again.
