I am using the retractable leash with Harper because we are at the park. I usually don't like to use this leash because it can be bulky and hard to handle, also it can sometimes get caught up on your pet's legs, so you have to be careful using it! You'll see in the video that I'm lengthening the retractable leash to be able to get a distance away from her while I practice the "sit & stay." When it comes to the stay command, before you decide to walk away and add some distance, you must first get your time down solid. It goes in this order: duration, distance and then distraction - it's called the 3D'S! Place your dog in a sit then say "stay" and your palm should be flat out facing them, then you would count to about a few seconds and then mark and reward! You're going to build your time up and when you can get up to about 20-30 seconds, your next step would be to add on a little distance by taking a couple of steps back - if your dog gets up then you moved too quickly, so start again. Once your dog masters the duration and distance, then you would add on distraction. And boom, you got it!
