Taylor acoustic guitars have what I consider to be a 'deal-making' feature - the bolt-on neck that makes 'shim-powered' neck resets possible. They're the only brand that has anticipated the inevitable need for the neck reset (once the overall structure of the guitar has folded up enough to raise the playing action above a comfortable level) - and made it easy. Instead of finding yourself faced with the prospect of a £4-600 bill for a traditional neck reset (in which the glue holding the neck on has to be softened so the neck joint can be broken apart and the whole angle of the heel re-worked) all you have to do is remove the neck, change the shim pair and reassemble. Presto! Your action is now lowered to where you want it to be.
The ability to do this depends on your guitar tech being able to get hold of the correct Taylor shims - and in the recent past I had no contact with Taylor and rumour had it they didn't want to make these shims avaiable; they only wanted their qualified technicians to use them. Ok - that's understandable. But it's not rocket science - and I think Taylor should have made it user-friendly i.e. easy enough for the owner to do themselves. Make a big deal about it being the only guitar that you really can have for life; supply a full set of shims with each guitar and blow the Taylor trumpet about it. It's SUCH a good move (as far as I'm concerned) that I absolutely would consider another Taylor if / when I was looking for my 'last' acoustic guitar - the one that's going to outlive me.
But they don't do that. Instead you have to sort of find out there's a way to contact Taylor in the Netherlands.. and if you ask politely they may be willing to send you some shims (after getting the serial number from you, the currently-installed shim numbers and the current playing action and target action. They've done this for me a few times now. I made a point of asking if they were happy for me to regularly contact them with a request for more shims for a particular guitar - since I was a guitar tech and would be likely to have several of these guitars over the course of a year. They assured me that they are willing to do that; just contact them case-by-case.
Getting the correct shims to change the neck angle is without a doubt the right way to with Taylor acoustics because it's preserves the break angle of the strings over the saddle, something that quickly gets lost when making action adjustments by reducing the saddle. Good on Taylor; ought to make more out of this brilliant feature in terms of marketing.
