Working with groups of A2 and FCE learners of mixed levels using differentiation as part of my daily teaching made me think about useful, subtle ways to assess individuals and classes without tying my learners into formal assessment structures. In my classes I have developed informal assessment methods that address this approach to learning and, in the process, discovered a whole new understanding of what my learners already had at their disposal and what they needed the most. This presentation will highlight areas of formative, informal assessment whereby students’ progress can be measured in relation to their individual learning needs and abilities and outline outcomes based on my own classroom experience.

Touria has over 9 years language teaching experience in London, Turkey, Morocco and Ireland teaching General & Business English and working on Entry to Employment courses. She is currently working at Swan ELT on the General English, FCE and Certificate in English Language Teaching (CELT) programmes. Her areas of interest are language awareness and student support, which are the focus of her masters studies in professional development and language teaching.
