Tadoba is the largest park in Maharashtra state, its name – from the term “maha kantara” or the great forests. It has a mix of grasslands and dry deciduous forest, spread over 1,727 Sq.km. In 1995 is became Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve. Tadoba is full of history of the Gonds and their ancient kingdoms, and a revered tribal chieftain. Tadoba Andhari National Park derives its name from God “Tadoba” or “Taru” worshipped by the local Gonds. Taru was the brave village chieftain who was killed in a fierce encounter with a tiger his shrine is in the tiger reserve.
