A slideshow of photos I took during my first visit to Ballybay in County Monaghan on Friday 18th December 2020.

Ballybay (Irish: Béal Átha Beithe, meaning "mouth of the ford of the birch") is a town in County Monaghan, It is centered on the crossroads of the R183 and R162 regional roads. It had a population of 1,241 in the 2016 Census. The town grew up from the convergence of the roads. The town is built beside a large lake, Lough Major (In Irish "Lough Mór") and the smaller Lough Minor. The Dromore River also runs through the south of the town, past Pearse Brother's Football Grounds, and past the Riverdale Hotel.

Ballybay had a population of 1,241 in the 2016 Census.

The town grew up in the 18th century, gaining its prosperity from the linen industry founded by the Jackson family. The first market house in Ballybay was built around 1775 in The Square.

The present Ballybay Market House was built in 1848. It was designed by William Walker and is a four bay two-storey building. Markets took place in the ground floor while the first floor functioned as a courthouse, a schoolhouse, library and an assembly room for dances and concerts.

The Town council (Ballybay Development Committee) was established in 1871. Ballybay would continue to have a town council until 2014 when all of Ireland's town councils were abolished.

On 1st January 1921, an Irish Republican Army ambush led by Stephen Wise killed one Royal Irish Constabulary man, one civilian and three Auxiliaries were wounded during the Irish War of Independence.

St. Patrick's Church is the Roman Catholic Church in Ballybay. The foundation stone was laid in 1859. It was dedicated in 1865. The spire was completed in 1871. William Hague designed this church and the contractor was George Burnett. It is one of three churches in Tullycorbet Parish in the Diocese of Clogher.

Christ Church is the Church of Ireland (Anglican) in Ballybay. It was built in 1801. It was renovated in 1881 and the chancel was added in 1881. It is one of three churches in Ballybay Union of Parishes in the Diocese of Clogher.

Second Ballybay Presbyterian Church in Ballybay was built in 1834 and was remodelled in 1888. It is called the Second Ballybay Presbyterian Church as the first Presbyterian Church in Ballybay was located in Derryvally 2km west of the town.

Ballybay railway station opened on 17th July 1854. It was located on the former Dundalk-Enniskillen railway line. Ballybay became a railway junction when the Ballybay to Cootehill railway line  opened in 1860. The Ballybay-Cootehill line closed in 1947. Ballybay Railway Station closed to passenger traffic on 14th October 1957 and finally closed altogether on 1st January 1960.

Local Link route M2 links the village with Monaghan several times daily Mondays to Saturdays inclusive. Collins Coaches provide a daily service from the town to Dublin via Carrickmacross, Ardee and Slane. Bus Éireann route 162 serves the town on schooldays linking Ballybay to Doohamlet, Castleblayney, Newbliss, Clones and Monaghan.

The local GAA club is Ballybay Pearse Brothers. It was founded in 1908. The club's home ground is Pearse Park, located on the outskirts of the town. Since 1935, the club has won the Monaghan Senior Football Championship on 8 occasions, most recently in 2012.

Kepak has a meat factory in Ballybay. It used to be owned by Silvercrest Foods.

Ballybay is twinned with the town of Osterhofen/Gergweis in Bavaria.

The singer / songwriter Tommy Makem wrote a lighthearted song about the town, "In the Town of Ballybay".

Scoil Eanna and Ballybay Central National School are the primary schools in Ballybay. Ballybay Community College is the secondary school in Ballybay.

Ballybay Town Park is located next to Lough Major. Ballybay Wetlants Centre is located along the Clones Road.
