In March 1914, Butler went ashore at Veracruz not as a Marine, but a spy! In preparation for an invasion, Butler made his way secretly into Mexico City to determine the size of units and states of readiness of the Mexican Army. Pretending to be with the US Secret Service on a mission, Butler met President Huerta, who gave him free access to all the military garrisons of Mexico City. Butler returned with valuable maps which he hid in the false bottom of his bag.
