100-thousand demonstrators jammed the streets of Zagreb in Croatia to protest against  the government's decision to close down an independent radio station.

The rally went ahead on Thursday night despite the government reversing its decision to  let Radio 101 stay on the air.

Tens of thousands of protestors converged on Zagreb's Jelacic square in a rally  originally conceived as a gathering to demonstrate for Radio 101's continued existence.

But it turned into the biggest peacetime political rally since the proclamation of Croatian  independence in June 1991.

The rally was organised by Croatia's Helsinki Committee, the leading human rights  watchdog, and Zagreb's Students' Association.

It ended without incident after just one hour when Radio 101 managers bade  demonstrators a good night and appealed to them to leave the square peacefully.

There has been a huge reaction to the government's decision earlier in the week to  withdraw the license of the widely popular radio station.

But on Thursday the Croatian government said Radio 101 could continue broadcasting  for the time being, and there would be a new round of bidding for the radio frequency.

On Wednesday, officials said that the frequency that Radio 101 has been using for the  last 12 years was given to a radio project that exists only on paper and is backed by  the owner of the independent weekly Globus.

That decision would have effectively closed the radio station by the end of November.

It triggered the first spontaneous demonstration in downtown Zagreb in years, with  thousands of protesters taking to the street late Wednesday.
