Textbook sections about Mahatma Gandhi, the Mughal Empire and the theory of evolution were only some of those the Indian government has removed from students’ textbooks in 2023.  

The recent deletions aren’t an isolated event. Rewriting history has been a major priority of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist party — and the impacts have been felt way beyond textbooks.
