Roman Emperors lived in sumptuous palaces, but they also lived in fear, knowing they would likely die or be assassinated in those palaces.

After an emperor did die, his reputation was either burnished or destroyed by writers of the time who wanted to earn the favour of the next ruler.

That is where some of the wildest stories of Roman emperors come from, including the story of Emperor Nero, who reportedly fiddled while Rome burned and Emperor Caligula, who allegedly made his horse a consul.

Professor Mary Beard is a classicist who is intrigued by how much truth there could be to these tales, and what they tell us about the Roman Empire.
