Once a significant stronghold, Petre Fortress served as a headquarters for the occupying army during the Turkish era. Seized by the Turks in the late 16th century, it previously belonged to the noble Avalishvili family, controlling the entire gorge. The exact origins and later history of the fortress remain a mystery. Unlike Atsquri Fortress, which was still in use in the 19th century, little is known about Petre Fortress's later years.
Now, the fortress stands as mysterious ruins high above the Kura River, visible from the Romanov Palace in Likani. The palace, surrounded by a park, once had a bridge over the Kura, allowing easy access to the fortress.
