What do tonsils have to do with your child’s sleep? According to health experts at Lee Memorial Health System, tonsils could disrupt your child’s sleep.

According to Dr. Jose Colon, a sleep medicine doctor with Lee Memorial Health System, two percent of children have sleep apnea, often caused by enlarged tonsils which in some cases can cause the child to snore. “If the tonsils are big the air is not fully moving through.”

He says snoring can disturb the child’s sleep even mimicking behavioral problems like ADHD. “I have had cases where I have a kid with loud snoring and they have a pretty significant sleep apnea and we get the tonsils taken out and low and behold all of their ADHD symptoms actually do go away.”

However, just because a child snores does not mean they have sleep apnea. Before suggesting surgery, Dr. Colon recommends a sleep study, where they can monitor the child’s breathing to find out if the tonsils are causing the sleep problems.

“Some of the things that we’re looking for is the air flow” said Dr. Colon. “If the snoring is present but the air is moving really well you’re not going to accomplish anything by taking out the tonsils; however, if you see that the air flow is coming down and that’s disrupting the oxygen levels during the evening then that could be a problem with obstructive sleep apnea.” In that case, he says, doctors might recommend removing the tonsils.
