Now that we've covered the particle in a box, we are familiar with the concept of a quantum problem. Let's move on to our second quantum problem, that of the quantum barrier potential. With this one, we don't have an infinite square well containing a particle, we have a free particle that encounters a barrier of finite potential. This is a good model for an electron that encounters a defect in a wire. How do we know if the electron will be able to traverse this barrier? As it turns out, even if the energy of the electron is less than the barrier potential, it may still be able to be transmitted due to a phenomenon called quantum tunneling. This is pretty weird, but entirely rooted in sound mathematics, so let's go over the math and learn more about this freaky concept!
