Introduction
• The Five Pillars of Islam are five basic acts in Islam
• They are obligatory on every Muslim
• They are as follows:
• The shahada (creed)
• Daily prayers (salat)
• Fasting during Ramadan (sawm)
• Almsgiving (zakāt) and
• The pilgrimage to Mecca (hajj) at least once in a lifetime
The Five Pillars
• We discuss them one by one briefly
1. Shahada(creed)

• Shahadah is a saying professing monotheism and accepting Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as God's Messenger
• Its normally recited in Arabic as (ašhadu an) lā ilāha illá l-Lāhu (wa ashhadu 'anna) Muḥammadan rasūlu l-Lāh(PBUH)
• When a person wishes to convert his religion, he should recite this affirmation and believe in it
2. Salat

• Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) mentioned that the difference between Muslim and non-believer is Salat
• It is obligatory for every Muslim to offer prayer
• Salat consists of five daily prayers: Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha'a
• Prophet (PBUH) told us that the first question on the day of judgement will be asked regarding Salat
3 Sawm

• There are three types of fasting (Sawm) as recognized by the Qur'an: Ritual fasting, fasting as compensation for repentance (both from sura Al-Baqara), and ascetic fasting (from Al-Ahzab)
• Ritual fasting is an obligatory act during the month of Ramadan
• Muslims must abstain from food, drink, and sexual intercourse from dawn to dusk during this month
• The fast is meant to allow Muslims to seek nearness to God
• Fast is also with purpose to understand the problems of needy
4 Zakāt

• The word zakat is originated from zaka which means to purify
• The purpose of zakat is to purify one’s wealth
• Zakat consists of spending 2.5% of one's wealth for the benefit of the poor or needy, including slaves, debtors and travelers
• A Muslim may also donate more as an act of voluntary charity (sadaqah), to achieve additional divine reward

5 Hajj

• This act of worship which has to be done once in a lifetime if:
You have wealth to do so
You have health to do do
• The Hajj is a pilgrimage that occurs during the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah to the holy city of Mecca
• When the pilgrim is around 10 km (6.2 mi) from Mecca, he must dress in Ihram clothing, which consists of two white sheets
• The main rituals of the Hajj include walking seven times around the Kaaba, touching the Black Stone, traveling seven times between Mount Safa and Mount Marwah, and symbolically stoning the Devil in Mina
• A pilgrimage made at any time other than the Hajj season is called an Umrah
