The cells in our body have evolved certain mechanisms to respond to any change, known as adaptations or cellular response to the stress. In this pathology lecture, we will learn about these processes, which are hypertrophy, hyperplasia, atrophy, and metaplasia. Maximizing your learning capacity with mnemonics and relation to real-life examples and diseases.

Every cell that makes up the organ systems in our body requires specific conditions to survive. Homeostasis is this steady-state condition that is necessary for the cells and organs to perform their functions properly. So, they are continually trying to oppose any change, to maintain homeostasis.

The stress or noxious stimuli of the cell can be of two types: physiological or pathological.

Physiological stress means disturbing the body's normal internal state e.g. starvation, exposure to extreme cold or hot, hemorrhage, etc. Pathological stress means some infection or inflammation caused by a pathogenic organism.
