Margate is one of the most popular beaches in South Africa, but it has a dark history of shark attacks. In the late 1950s, a series of attacks claimed six lives and left the community in shock. Known as “Black December” Beaches such as Uvongo and Margate saw fatal shark attacks.

This video explores the events of "Black December" and the subsequent efforts to make Margate safe for swimmers and surfers. We'll learn about the failed attempts to use enclosures and depth charges, and how the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board was founded in response to the crisis.

Today, the Sharks Board maintains shark nets and drum lines along 320 kilometers of coastline, making South Africa a leader in shark safety. Thanks to their dedicated work, we can all enjoy the beauty of Margate's beaches without fear.
