In this video, I discuss an evil and tricky scam called "virtual kidnapping," which has both low-tech and hi-tech variations. The hi-tech version involves scammers using voice cloning technology to steal your voice and spoof your phone number, then use it to scam your friends and family. The low-tech version involves scammers pretending to be a loved one or friend in distress, often in the background of the call.
The best ways to protect against these types of scams are to inform everyone you know about them and come up with an emergency password for you and your friends. You'll probably also want to disable voice verification features in any services you use. I also discuss the importance of being aware of AI technology advancements and always being suspicious when someone asks you to send them money, no matter who it is.
