Characterizing Microplastics in Infant Formula with the LDIR

While many might assume that infants’ exposure to these tiny plastic particles would be limited, infant formula has been identified as a possible pathway for microplastic ingestion. However, extracting and isolating microplastics from infant formula can indeed be challenging due to the diverse range of formulations, ingredients, and components present, including fats, proteins, minerals, vitamins, and sugars. In a recent study, the Agilent 8700 Laser Direct Infrared (LDIR) Chemical Imaging System was employed to accurately identify and quantify microplastics in infant formula using a newly developed extraction method.
