Johannes Kepler was a German mathematician, astronomer, and astrologer born in Weil der Stadt, Germany in 1571. Despite studying theology at the University of Tübingen, his interest in mathematics and astronomy led him to pursue a career in science. Kepler became an assistant to Tycho Brahe, the Imperial Mathematician to Emperor Rudolf II, and after Tycho's death, was appointed his successor. It was during this time that Kepler made his most important discoveries, including his three laws of planetary motion, which were a major contribution to modern astronomy. Kepler also wrote important works on the theory of vision and the properties of lenses, and was interested in astrology. He married twice, had six children, and struggled with financial difficulties and health problems throughout his life. Kepler's work influenced the later work of Isaac Newton, and he is widely regarded as one of the greatest astronomers of all time. Kepler died in Regensburg, Germany in 1630, at the age of 58.
