Bob Dylan, born Robert Zimmerman, is an American singer-songwriter, poet, and cultural icon. Renowned for his distinctive voice and profound lyrics, Dylan has had a lasting impact on the folk and rock music genres. He’s known for his influential albums like "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" (1963) and "Highway 61 Revisited" (1965) and hit songs like "Blowin' in the Wind," "The Times They Are a-Changin'," "Like a Rolling Stone," and "Knockin' on Heaven's Door." Bob Dylan's influence extends to a wide array of artists across genres. Some musicians who have been inspired by him or collaborated with him include Joan Baez, The Byrds, Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen, and Neil Young.

Since 1994, Dylan has published nine books of paintings and drawings, and his work has been exhibited in major art galleries. He has sold more than 145 million records, making him one of the best-selling musicians of all time. He has received numerous awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, ten Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and an Academy Award. Dylan has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The Pulitzer Prize Board in 2008 awarded him a special citation for "his profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power". In 2016, Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition".

Dylan is considered a seminal influence on many musical genres. As Edna Gundersen stated in USA Today: "Dylan's musical DNA has informed nearly every simple twist of pop since 1962". Punk musician Joe Strummer praised Dylan for having "laid down the template for lyric, tune, seriousness, spirituality, depth of rock music". Other major musicians who acknowledged Dylan's importance include Johnny Cash, Jerry Garcia, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Pete Townshend, Syd Barrett, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Bryan Ferry, Patti Smith, Nick Cave, and Leonard Cohen. Tom Waits said that "for a songwriter, Dylan is as essential as a hammer and nails and saw are to a carpenter." Dylan significantly contributed to the initial success of both the Byrds and the Band: the Byrds achieved chart success with their version of "Mr. Tambourine Man" and the subsequent album, while the Band were Dylan's backing band on his 1966 tour, recorded The Basement Tapes with him in 1967 and featured three previously unreleased Dylan songs on their debut album.
