Highlights of the infamous fights between Riddick “Big Daddy” Bowe and “The Foul Pole” or “Powerful Pole” Andrzej Gołota or Andrew Golota. These two fights were better known for the fact that Golota could not stop throwing low blows despite multiple warnings by referees in both bouts.

The first bout took place in July 1996 in Madison Square Garden billed as “Big Daddy’s Home”. Prior to this bout, Riddick Bowe had beaten the legendary Evander Holyfield in their rubber match, knocking him out in the 8th round and since then, have been considered to be the best heavyweight in the sport at that time.

Bowe had only one loss previously, also against Holyfield in their 2nd bout where the infamous fan man incident took place. Bowe was severely overweight in that bout, and in spite of that put up a great performance and only losing a slim majority decision. Bowe had a number of notables wins leading up to the first Golota fight - Pierre Coetzer, Bruce Seldon, Michael Dokes, Herbie Hide, Tony Tubbs, Tyrell Biggs, Jorge Luis González, Larry Donald and Pinklon Thomas.

Bowe was extremely confident, weighing in at a career high 252 pounds (nearly 20 pounds higher than his ideal weight), Bowe was a 12-1 favorite and infamously stated "How do you train for a bum?" in response to his weight. Lou Duva, Golota’s trainer on the other hand stated that Bowe’s weight would serve to their advantage and was sure that Golota would go on to beat Bowe. Golota did not have any notable victories going into the fight and Bowe believed that he would finish the unknown Pole in two or three rounds (as stated in an interview).

An overweight, undertrained Bowe was outmatched constantly as Golota surprised Bowe and most of the boxing world outjabbing and outpunching Bowe throughout the fight but unable to stop himself from throwing low blows. Golota was warned for low blows in rounds 2 and 3, and in round 4 lost a point. Then in round 6, Golota was deducted another point for low blows and threatened with a disqualification if he refused to stop.

In round 7, Golota was hit by Riddick Bowe on the back of the head at one point, shortly after Wayne Kelly warned Bowe about it and the fight continues, Golota landed another low blow that got him disqualified. A massive riot occurred after, and Duva had to be hospitalized and the riot went on for a long time before police forces arrived to quell it.

The second bout took place in December 1996, this time in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Bowe came into the fight at a trim 235 pounds, having trained hard for three months and enlisted renowned nutritionist Mackie Shiltone to be in his best shape for the rematch. This is seen as a chance for Bowe to redeem himself from his poor performance in the first fight.

Despite being in shape this time, the rematch was nearly identical to the first one where Bowe was outworked most of the time and looked lethargic and weak despite being in shape. Once again, Golota was unable to keep his punches above the beltline. Bowe fought with tremendous courage as he took ridiculous punishment and even managed to land a number of good shots including a knockdown in round 4 which was a combination of an uppercut and a couple of rabbit punches.

Golota was warned by Eddie Cotton multiple times for lows blows and also for a headbutt and rabbit punching. In spite of that, Golota failed to keep his punches up despite leading well in the scorecards, even with the point deductions.

Golota scored knockdowns in round 2 and 5. Bowe looked to be a spent force in this bout. Many have considered Bowe's downfall to be the result of his undisciplined lifestyle and constant shift in weight of up to 80 pounds in between bouts combined with the amount of punishment he took in various bouts.

Riddick Bowe was washed up at only 29 years old.

Golota was disqualified in the 9th round, as Cotton have seen enough after Golota threw a three punch combination below the belt, leaving Bowe writhing in pain. Golota would have won had the fight went on for one more round, and it would have been the biggest upset since Tyson-Holyfield just a month earlier.

Both fighters were never the same after these fights; Golota’s career suffered from notable losses to Grant, Tyson and Lewis and he was arrested for a bar brawl in Poland.

On the other hand, Bowe suffered brain damage and ran into a variety of financial and legal troubles in the years that follow. These two bouts have become among the most memorable events in the history of boxing.
