DR KAREN COOMBES runs the Tree Roo Rescue and Conservation Centre in Malanda on the Atherton Tableland, Queensland. Here she cares for injured Lumholtz’s tree kangaroos, a species which is frequently attacked by domestic dogs or killed in collisions with cars.

In this footage we see a juvenile 10-month-old tree roo called Zoe having climbing lessons. Tree kangaroos are adept at climbing in the treetops and are able to both walk backwards and move their hind limbs independent to one another – something ground-based kangaroos cannot do.
