When Batman has to get around Gotham, there’s no better solution than the badass Batman Batmobile. The Batmobile is one of the most iconic cars in pop culture history, from the comics Batmobile to the animated Batmobile, the Bat Mobile is a legend in automotive circles. All the Batmobiles have certain design elements in common, but every Batman Batmobile is a unique beast. The car of Bruce Wayne has to be suited for street combat, and when it comes to the DC comics, physics and engineering go out the window. As for live action Batmobiles, the Batmobile evolution requires a little more thought to make these fantastic cars work in real life. It’s always a challenge bringing Batman tech to life, and when it comes to an automotive monstrosity, the stakes are high. That’s why all the live action Batmobiles are always so impressive, and the best Batmobiles stay with us long after the Batman movies reboot with a new Dark Knight car. Then and now, the Batmobile is the first name in superhero transportation, and they’re so much more than just a crazy car.

In our Batmobile retrospective, the history of Batmobile begins a long time ago with the Batman serials of the 1940s. Those were just stock convertibles from the factory floor, but the first custom Batmobile changed the game a few decades later with the 1966 Batmobile. The George Barris Batmobile, or Adam West Batmobile, was a customized Lincoln Futura concept car tricked out with atomic turbines, an ahead of it’s time Batphone, and all the gadgets and Batman tech the Adam West Batman could want. After the 1966 Batman TV series ran its course, we received a new Tim Burton Batman movie in 1989. The 1989 Batman changed the way we think about the Dark Knight, and Batman 1989 had a brand new Batmobile that was unlike anything we’d seen before. The Tim Burton Batmobile, or the Michael Keaton Batmobile, was a sleek, low-profile hot-rod created by Anton Furst. Batmobile tech would evolve with the Joel Schumacher Batman films, Batman Forever Batmobile and Batman and Robin Batmobile.

After Batman and Robin fizzled out at the box office, a new Christopher Nolan Batman was necessary to bring the Batman movies back on top. Officially, there’s no such thing as a Christopher Nolan Batmobile, or a Christian Bale Batmobile for that matter, because the Dark Knight Batmobile was never referred to as such. Instead, it’s known only as the Tumbler. The Batman Tumbler from the Batman Begins Tumbler, The Dark Knight Tumbler, and The Dark Knight Rises Tumbler might not be an official Batmobile, but it’s damn impressive anyway, especially when it transforms into the brilliant Batpod. Now, with the DCEU Batman fully established in Batman v. Superman and Suicide Squad, we’ve got a new DCEU Batmobile that we first saw in Batman v. Superman Batmobile and the Suicide Squad Batmobile. For Justice League, Batmobile doesn’t really apply to the Knightcrawler, a giant mechanical spider that sure as hell isn’t street legal. We don’t know what the future holds for the Batman movies franchise, but I’m sure there will be a badass new Batmobile, just like all the Batmobiles.
