If you're thinking of heading to Mount Bachelor to ski or snowboard, here are five tips: 1) Stay Multiple Days if You Want to Visit the Summit - The Summit is great for advanced and expert skiers and snowboarders. You can take in the views, ski or snowboard down into Mt. Bachelor's volcanic crater, or head down the backside. There are 360 degrees of options at the top. However, the summit is often closed due to extreme wind and weather. So if you want to increase your chances of experiencing the summit, plan to visit Mt. Bachelor for multiple days. 2) Visit During the Week - While this tip seems obvious because most resorts are less crowded during the week than on weekends, it's key for Mt. Bachelor because many people may incorrectly think that Mt. Bachelor is less crowded on weekends than other resorts because it is a 4-hour drive from Portland. A 4-hour drive is a bit far for those who are flying into Portland for a weekend ski trip. Despite that, Mt. Bachelor can still get pretty crowded on weekends, so don't be fooled into thinking that it will be less crowded than other resorts on weekends. 3) Driving Shortcut - Most people will stay in Bend, Oregon. The main road to Mt. Bachelor from Bend is Route 372. It can have significant traffic on the weekends. If you're staying in the south of Bend, or in Three Rivers or Sunriver, you can consider driving to Mt. Bachelor on NF-45, which can help you avoid much of the traffic. 4) Parking - If you already have your chairlift tickets, you may want to skip the Sunrise and main parking lots, and instead park at the Junior Racer Lot. There are no chairlift ticket offices there, so it tends to fill up less quickly. 5) Chairlift Tickets - If you are going to buy a lift ticket at the mountain, consider buying a ticket from Bachelor directly rather than using the Ikon Pass friends and family discount. Depending on your circumstances, it could be cheaper. You can also consider the Fast Track pass, which is an add-on that allows you to use a priority lane at the chairlift. This may only be worth it on the weekends because the weekday lines are much shorter.
