In a remote corner of Slovenia, the homeland of U.S. First Lady Melania Trump, Ana Ros has all she needs for the perfect meal.
She uses home-grown ingredients and her imagination to create incredible food. In fact it's so good it won her the title of "The World's Best Female Chef 2017" by The World's 50 Best Restaurants.
Her restaurant "Hisa Franko" or the House of Franko, is situated in an Alpine area in northwestern Slovenia, near the border with Italy and Austria. She runs it with her partner Valter Kramar.
She is self-taught, mixing traditional recipes with original twists.
"Our kitchen is very different from most of the cuisines of the world. Most of the chefs who visit our restaurant, they go out and say: 'Wow, that's so different'. That comes also by my story, because I never staged (studied), I never did schools, so my approach to the kitchen is maybe more free than most of other chefs," says Ros.
Ros and her husband fell into this career by chance when they inherited his family's restaurant near the town of Kobarid 15 years ago.
Surrounded by the stunning Soca valley, the inn attracted nature lovers roaming the Slovenian Alps and admiring the country's beauty.
Ros took over the kitchen and started experimenting with local specialties, enhancing them with spices, strong flavours and interesting designs.
"Sometimes food critics and reviewers appreciate more a great idea and a great taste than maybe sometimes a lack of some technical skills or whatever," says Ros.
Food and restaurant critic Bostjan Napotnik believes Ros' popularity lies in the fact that she's unusual and not yet globally famous:
"The whole culinary world has started to search for small stories, for the stories that are no part of a classical, big, expensive or known gastronomies," says Napotnik.
"And as the world has started changing and the information flows much faster, people travel more. I think there was the urge, the people started searching for new things, for things that are not known."
Ros' profile is rapidly growing however and helping promote her small country of just 2 million people.
She'd already appeared on the Netflix series Chef's Table before winning the Best Female Chef title this year.
Even former Slovenian President Danilo Turk is a fan of her food and has been visiting Hisa Franko for years.
"She has demonstrated her unique ability to use local ingredients, local know-how, local tradition for global success of a project, which happens to be a culinary project. Something that is very much appreciated nowadays, gastronomy has become a big industry. And, it's also very important culturally," he says.
A six course meal at Hisa Franko is currently available for 85 Euros (95 US Dollars) and an eleven course meal for 120 Euros (135 US Dollars) per person.
