This video lecture discusses the types of flow and types of channels.
Open channel flow is a flow that has a free surface and gravity force causing the flow.
Pipes that are not flowing full (with the free surface in the channel) also fall into the category of open channel flow (no pressure force).
In open channels, the flow is driven by the slope of the channel rather than the pressure
In open channel flow, the hydraulic gradient line coincides with the free water surface (z+y).
Also, due to the air resistance at the free surface, maximum velocity occurs slightly lower from the free surface in the open channel.
