The magnificent and ancient shrine of Itsukushima, known for its creative design that imagines the sea as part of its grounds and the architectural beauty of the Heian period, is located on Miyajima Island in Hiroshima Prefecture. The shrine is built about 160 meters offshore, and its grand torii gate stands 16.6 meters tall, with a ridge length of 24.2 meters, a circumference of 9.9 meters around the main pillars, and a total weight of approximately 60 tons, making it the largest wooden torii gate in Japan. The current grand torii gate is considered the ninth generation since the Heian period and was reconstructed in 1875 (Meiji 8). The scenery changes with the ebb and flow of the tide; at low tide, visitors can walk from the shrine grounds to the grand torii gate about 200 meters offshore, while at high tide, the gate is surrounded by seawater. The grand torii gate stands solely on its foundation stones, with a weight of about 60 tons, and weights are also placed within its components, so it is not fixed to the seabed but rather floats in place.
