Improving YouTube Recommender systems for big screen users | Rein Zhang | DSC Europe 23

In her talk, Rein discussed the challenges of recommender systems at the YouTube scale, emphasizing the multitude of ML and heuristic models aimed at delivering timely recommendations to billions of users. The talk focused on three major sources of challenges. Firstly, identifying specific user needs and behaviors that vary across different platforms. Secondly, determining the systems where investment would enhance performance and making decisions on whether to improve existing systems or build new ones. Lastly, it addresses the tradeoff between the measurability of success and associated costs. The talk elaborated on these aspects with a special focus on how the challenges and opportunities were addressed.
