While it might be a somewhat "common" act nowadays, or at the very least common during the heyday of the circus and other such events, there had to be people to start off this act. Truly, someone had to look at themselves and say, "Wouldn't it be interesting to try and tame a lion or other animals and make it do tricks?"
8. Henri Martin
If you're looking for the first true Lion Tamer, then you need to look no further than Henri Martin, a Frenchman and entertainer that made his name in many ways, but in 1819, he changed the world of performance for all eternity.
7. Thomas Chipperfield
The times of the circus are both still here, and yet, very far gone. The circus isn't what it used to be, and for some countries like England, the idea of wild animals in a circus setting is a recipe for disaster, so they've banned the practice. Which makes men like Thomas Chipperfield all the more amazing, because he was the last of his kind in the country.

Yvonne Berman may have taken a while to get into the life of a Lion Tamer, but she made the most of it by the time she did. In fact, her desire to train animals actually ended her first marriage because her husband didn't think it was wise.

In the Soviet Union, in the 1900's, there was a solo lion tamer who was not only amazing, she was female. The first of her kind, Irina Bugrimova transformed boredom into flair and style. For you see, when she joined the circus at a young age, she did things like being an acrobat, or doing tricks on a motorcycle, but she felt her truly calling was with the lions, and she was right. But most importantly of all, she was good, very good.
4. Gunther Gebel-Williams
There's a lot of training and skill needed to be a tamer of animals, and for Gunther Gebel-Williams, he showed he had that talent...by training himself. That's right, this is a man who taught himself to train animals over a hundred years after the art had been started.

There are many different levels of fame, especially in the circus. For Clyde Beatty though, he would take that fame to the next level, not only becoming of the most famous Lion Tamers ever, but being seen by more than just circus goers.
2. Carl Hagenbeck
Not all Lion Tamers used their acts to solely entertain, some wanted to use the acts to try and create a new perception of the animals. For Carl Hagenbeck, he actually went from a exotic animal trader to an animal trainer over the course of a few years. But his biggest motivation was to try and stop the cruel treatment of animals in this trade.

There have been many Lion Tamers in history, but, when it comes to Isaac Van Amburgh, he was one who not only set the bar, he raised it time and time again. Many consider him one of the most famous and influential of the Lion Tamers in history, which is no small feat to earn that title.
