In Malaysia, there are more than 160,000 refugees from countries like Myanmar, Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Even in the state of limbo that their legal status leaves them in, these refugees are striving to build new lives for themselves and their communities.

When CNA Insider producer Lam Shushan got to know Saleh Sepas, an Afghan playwright who founded Parastoo Theatre, and Mohamudul Hasson Roshid, a 20-year-old who is helping fellow Rohingyas find education, her own prejudices about refugees were challenged.

"There is a lack of trust towards the refugee society. They assume that refugees don't have any knowledge or skills,' said Saleh.

Malaysian social enterprises like the Picha Project are trying to change that by organising events that help refugees to integrate with locals. And there are also places like Kambiz Warriors gym which provide spaces where locals and refugees put their differences aside.
