Dysuria (Painful Urination): Symptoms, Causes & Treatment - Burning Urination
Dysuria is the medical term for pain or discomfort when urinating. Some patients often describe it as having an irritating or burning sensation in the urethra. Others experience pain in their back, flank, or stomach.
The pain may be described as "burning", or "scalding", or likened to "passing broken glass."
Dysuria (painful urination) is associated with;
• Urinary frequency
• Urinary urgency
• Urinary hesitancy
What are the causes of dysuria (painful urination) in men and women?
• Urinary tract infection.
• Sexually transmitted infection.
• Vaginitis.
• Prostate infection.
• Kidney stones.
• Ovarian cysts.
• Interstitial cystitis.
• Chemical sensitivity.
• Vaginal infection or irritation.
• Endometriosis.
• Benign prostate hyperplasia.
• Cancers
What are the symptoms of dysuria?
• Typically reported symptoms; Burning Stinging Itching Scalding – feels like passing broken glass
• Overwhelming urge to urinate
• Frequent urination
• Loss of bladder control
• Pain in the lower front area of the abdomen
• Cloudy urine that may have a strong odor and bloody urine
• Upper back pain
• High fever with shivering
• Nausea & vomiting
• Unpleasant or offensive-smelling vaginal discharge or odor
• Pain, soreness, or itching in the vagina
• Dyspareunia
How is Dysuria Treated?
• Determining the cause is the first stage in your treatment
• Urinary tract infections - antibiotics
• Severe pain - Phenazopyridine
• Trichomoniasis & bacterial vaginosis - antibiotics
• Yeast infections - antifungal drugs, either as a pill, suppository or cream
• Treatment of STIs
• Treating the underlying diseases
Prevention of Dysuria;
• Avoiding using irritant-containing soaps & observing hygiene.
• Drinking several glasses of water each day will assist to clean out your urinary tract.
• Ladies should wipe from front to back.
• Urinate right away following sexual activity to wash any bacteria out of the urethra.
