Beside hitting the "normal" shots, slicing the shuttle can be a very powerful weapon for badminton players and especially on a higher level it is used in many different situations.

In this video I will focus on the technique for the most common way to use slice: Dropshots. Beside the normal slice I will also go in detail on the so called reverse slice and break down the important keypoints of the racket and arm movement.

-- Summary ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As mentioned there are two ways of slicing. One option is the "normal" slice, where you hit the shuttle on the right side from a players perspective, the other option is the reverse slice, where you hit the shuttle on the left side (for lefties it is the other way around). By slicing the shuttle you will give your shots a different direction and the shuttle will also loose a lot of speed, even if you hit it with a lot of power.

Here are the important keypoints for both variations (for right handers):

Slice:
- Similar movement to straight clear and smash
- no or less forearmrotation during the hitting phase
- slice shuttle on the right side and hit the feathers
- wristmovement can help to increase slice

Reverse Slice:
- Similar movement to straight clear and smash
- racket and armmovement goes more from right to left during hitting phase
- use forearmrotation and make kind of a window wiper movement with your racket
- hit the shuttle on the left side
- you can use your wrist or adjust the grip a little to get easier to the left side of the shuttle

There are two options to adjust your shots:
1) speed of the arm movement
2) amount of slice

The more you slice it, the more tempo you need in your movement, otherwise your shots will not get over the net. That will also improve the deception in your shots, but it will also be more difficult to hit it with consistency. Try to start with a little less slice and less speed in the movement and try to increase both over time.

Hint: You cannot really see, how much slice you get into your shots but YOU CAN HEAR IT! The sound is completly different compared to a clean hit. Try to get a feeling for that as well, to be able to judge sliced shots.
