Rutte: "Good morning, how are you doing?"
Reporter: "How are you doing?"
Rutte: "I'm fine, but of course in anticipation for tonight."
Reporter: "Are you feeling optimistic?"
Rutte: "Cautiously, but we never know what will happen. So let's await what the voters will decide today, but based on the polls, cautiously, but knowing the sovereignty of the Dutch people, let's see what happens."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Rutte, Dutch caretaker prime minister:
"Well, of course, on the vaccines, this is a European issue. Collectively in Europe, we have bought the vaccines and distributed them, and in the Netherlands we are working very hard to apply the ones we have, and to make the most of a success out of it. Of course, looking back at the last 10 years, there have been some very serious issues that we have to deal with also moving forward. And at the same time, I'm proud of some of the things we accomplished as a country, not just me, but collectively."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Rutte, Dutch caretaker prime minister:
Rutte: "As I've said this week and last week, first await the results. But then I made it clear that one of my colleagues in parliament, colleague parties, the Christian Democrats, they are a sort of natural coalition partner for us."
Reporter: "And have you ruled anyone out?"
Rutte: "Yes, we ruled out the party of Geert Wilders because of what he said about Moroccans in the Netherlands, who are basically at this moment Dutch people, and for some of the things he has said about Islam and the Quran. And I ruled out the Forum for Democracy because of some of the things its leader has done in terms of anti-Semitism and racism."
Reporter: "Can voters trust you again?"
Rutte: "I would not stand here if if the answer would be no. So I believe the answer is yes. But of course, the voters have to decide that."

STORYLINE:
Dutch caretaker prime minister Mark Rutte cast his ballot in The Hague as polling stations opened across the Netherlands early Wednesday on the final day of a general election overshadowed by the coronavirus pandemic.
His conservative People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy has been leading polls by a wide margin for about a year, but the lead has been shrinking in recent weeks.
If his party emerges as the largest when polls close at 9 p.m. (2000 GMT), Rutte will be first in line to lead talks to form the next ruling coalition.
If he succeeds, he could become the country's longest-serving prime minister.
Rutte's popularity rose sharply last year as he steered his country through the pandemic that has killed more than 16,000 people in the Netherlands and plunged the prosperous nation of just over 17 million into recession.
But that popularity has eroded in recent weeks as public support for a months-long lockdown declined and his government resigned over a scandal involving tax officials wrongly labeling thousands of families as fraudsters.
