During the Second World War,
During the Second World War, the Nazis committed horrendous crimes during the Holocaust, and as the Allies and the Red Army liberated many different concentration camps the whole world saw the evil of the Third Reich. Within the camps, hundreds of thousands of prisoners had suffered greatly at the hands of the SS and the guards who were incredibly brutal. One aspect of the camps was the disgusting experimentation that occurred within the walls of the camps, and after World War 2 many doctors were brought to justice for their crimes.
One such doctor was Karl Gebhardt, who was before the conflict seen as a world leading surgeon and physician in the field of sports medicine. He was a well respected man, however when the Nazis came to power Gebhardt joined with the evil crimes. He became the personal doctor and the private physician of Heinrich Himmler, the Head of the SS. Himmler has gone down as one of the most evil men of the Nazi Regime as he oversaw the Holocaust and the concentration camps, and instructed his SS to carry out the cruelty.
Gebhardt also was asked to treat many high ranking Nazi members such as Reinhard Heydrich who was killed following an assassination attempt and also he was asked to treat Albert Speer who he nearly killed in his treatment. After the Second World War, Gebhardt was arrested and placed on trial during the Doctors Trials of the Nuremberg Trials, and was sentenced to death for his crimes.
